Robert Close - Managing Director

Robert is the managing director of Kurra-Wirra. His extensive knowledge of sheep breeding and the wool industry ensures he is a great mentor to the enthusiastic young family team. Robert’s knowledge of the science of skins, wool quality and genetic selection is one of the best in the industry.

Bernadette Close - Director/Administration

After a long and successful career in nursing, Bernadette supports the business by managing the stud’s administration. Together Robert & Bernadette have successfully grown and expanded Kurra-Wirra and raised their five children on the land. Three of their sons are now home as Farm Managers.

Anthony Close - Farm Manager

Anthony returned to Kurra-Wirra after completing an Agricultural Science degree at LaTrobe University.

Anthony is an active member in the Balmoral Sire Evaluation Trial currently being Deputy Chairman and working together with progressive breeders to advance his personal sheep skills, elite merino genetics and to enhance the merino industry. Anthony has taken a keen interest in performance-recording on both the sheep and cattle studs and has an extensive knowledge of the genetic performance of our livestock.

Simon Close - Farm Manager

Following the completion of a Bachelor of Business Majoring in Financial Planning, Simon was fortunate to work as an Accountant in both management and leadership roles at Superannuation Advisors Australia in Geelong. The skills he gained during these years have proved valuable to improving the management of our family run business since his return to Kurra-Wirra in 2017. Simon is an active member of the Balmoral Sire Evaluation Group and has a keen interest in developing genetic performance of both the sheep and cattle studs. 

Kathryn (Simon’s wife) currently works as a Physiotherapist in Hamilton, and as a Teacher at Edenhope College. She helps with the farm’s day to day duties and also supports Bernadette in accounts. 

Michael Close - Farm Manager

After finishing his AFL career with the Brisbane Lions, Michael completed a Diploma of Agribusiness at Marcus Oldham College in 2018 and has recently returned to Kurra-Wirra. Michael has a keen interest in animal nutrition and is currently participating in the LifeTime Ewe Management Program. 

James Lilburne - Angus Stud National Marketing Representative

James is based in Wagga Wagga NSW. He is the Angus Stud National Marketing Representative. 

Tom Silcock - The Mountain Dam Stud Manager

Tom manages the genetic selection for the previous ‘The Mountain Dam Stud’ owned ewes and rams, now of Kurra-Wirra. With a Diploma in Farm Management under his wing, Tom has spent his career educating others, while continuing his own education through a variety of industry networks and involvements. Tom was recently Chairman of Directors of The Mountain Dam Past Company, past Chairman of the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association (AMSEA) and the Western Victorian Balmoral Sire Evaluation Trial group. Tom was also a member of the leadership team that established the National Merino Ewe Lifetime Productivity Trial (MLP) and still manages the Balmoral component of that trial. Tom and Robert have worked alongside each other on many industry projects in the past and enjoy a strong respectful friendship.
