KURRA-WIRRA BREEDING PROGRAM

"Kurra-Wirra bulls are bred from an 800 strong head cow herd, run under tough commercial conditions. We do this to apply pressure on each cow and to test the capacity of her genetic traits so the ‘cream can rise to the top’. This allows only the most profitable genetics to remain within the herd. "

We use the best Angus and Red Angus sires from around the world, joined over a commercial cow herd that doesn't get any favours. The cattle that come out the other end are built for real conditions — growth, carcase quality, fertility, temperament, and for those heading north, genuine heat tolerance through the slick gene.

We're involved in the TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE) and the Leachman $Profit analysis, which gives us solid, comparable data to keep making better decisions every year. We also use genomics across the program to back up what we're seeing on the ground.

The aim is simple — breed bulls that make our clients more profitable.

Female selection — how we do it

We cull hard and we cull often. Every female in the stud has to earn her place:

  • Get in calf every year — no exceptions

  • Calve unassisted at two years of age

  • Temperament must be sound. Protective of her calf is fine. Any hint of madness and she's gone

  • Conformation and structure assessed before entry into the stud

  • Must stack up on birth weight, growth and carcase data

Type and structure come first. Genetic performance comes second. Never the other way around.
